I just heard about his retirement announcement. Not the news I would like to hear but I am not surprised. He has given his life and blood to this sport and I am very proud of him. He will go on to do good things for this world, that is just the type of person he is.

Genki thanks for translation.

Oh no. My heart sank when I read the news, Genki, so thanks for the translation (as upsetting as it is). Unlike you, Shyla, I was hoping against hope (selfishly) that he wouldn't retire. I agree that he has given his blood, sweat and tears to the sport but there is no one like him nor will there ever be so I still can't comprehend the news. I am in absolute shock and very sad.

I do wish him well, of course, and I know he will continue to excel in whatever he chooses to do because he's such a naturally gifted person in every way. I do want him to be happy so if this is what will make him happy then I will eventually be happy for him once I come to terms with the news.

Genki thank you for info - very sad news but I'm not surprised.

Believe me or not, that's first think that came to my mind when reading about the event in Kurashiki of 15th October. Last April Dai promised that in Kurashiki he would have made public announcement about his final decision.

I'm sad and broken but not surprised - For sure Dai has the fire but not the health. Competiting and forcing himself to keep pace with younger skaters in this age of quads would only damage his knee over and over again. And Dai knows it.

Let's celebrate Dai-chan for all he did in his career and for all the beauty he gave us in competitions. He will go on doing wonderful and amazing programs as pro-skater, letting his artistry free to express. And he will always be the wonderful person we all love. Wish him all the love and the best.

Sorry for confused post... not surprised but broken anyway....

Q: Can you share with us what your vision is for the future, if you please?

Daisuke: Well, let me see, I wonder how appropriate to talk about it here on this stage.

I have decided to retire and would like to move on to the next objective.

That’s how I concluded.

This is a sudden turn for myself too, to make this decision.

I thought I would take my time to think about it for a year or two,

to decide if I retire or continue to compete

But.. well,

even when I try to ponder over it to clear my thought

I realized that I have something woolly and cloudy in my mind.

To move forward, I thought I should draw a line.

I felt that I wanted to retire though I know it’s a sudden decision.

But, the direction I would move to hasn’t been determined at all yet.

I just will have a clear and refreshed mind having retired,

and I would like to see myself in a different way.

I have a longer time ahead of me than my past career,

like now I am looking at all of you here

I am surrounded by all the big elders

suggesting me there are many different paths to follow.

I believe I need far more passion than before to lead the life ahead of me,

so, I have no specific target or goal yet but now

I want to just decide to retire to go on to the next stage.

Thank you.

***** ***** ***** ***** *****

Daichan had to announce this important news in Kurashiki, his home.

I'm broken too, but I love his wish to come where it all started to tell us this,
respecting the people who have supported him for the longest time.

It warmed up my heart and put a smile on my face.

But tonight, I'll cry.

Thank you Twind - and thanks to Dai-chan for expressing his feelings in such a delicate and intimate manner. He promised to speak in his hometown and he did, out of love for those who supported him from the very beginning.

Not unexpected - but painful anyway. I'm at work now and cannot cry....

According to rosewood of FSU (Source thread http://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/index.php?threads/takahashi-is-to-announce-retirement-at-a-press-conference-on-oct-14.93321/page-2) during press conference

He did not talk much about the reasons of his retirement, but said that lack of motivation can be counted as a reason considering the length of four years until the next Olympics. It was middle of September he made the decision. He felt it was shame the cat was out before he announced his retirement by himself. He wishes his fans to remember him like "Yeah, there was a skater named Takahashi at that time", and also he wishes to be supported when he started walking on a new path in the future. He said it would be nice if he'll be involved in this sport in the future although he has not decided whether he'll be involved in this sport or take a different path out of figure skating. He'll skate in shows but wants to take more distance from figure skating than before for a while.

Dai-chan... as usual you underestimate yourself and your achievements.... not only your devoted fans but all those who really love figure-skating will remember you as one of the Greatest.

To me you are The Greatest.

Thank you Shyla and Let's Talk for the additional reactions from the Skating World.  I hope their collective words proves to Dai just how much his skating has meant to the world.  His announcement has made headlines here, in Canada, which hasn't always been the case for International skaters that have retired.  It's been more validation of just how special Dai is.

It's hard... you all know. Anyway, my heart is a bit relieved by the huge amount of love and respect for Dai that figure skaters express publicly on their socials, so that it can be spread all over the web.

Thank you for providing the latest comments Pattina. It somehow makes me feel a bit better reading how adored and well respected Dai is within the skating community.

I have been consoling myself by thinking of the possibilities for his new life. There are so many careers he can venture into with his endless talent and special spark. I have no doubt in my mind that his great success will continue. Selfishly I have thought of careers in the public eye but I hope he will pursue what makes him happy.

It's been few days... maybe I will be able to put some words together.

Tatsuki said it best:
Takahashi-senshu’s retirement is a devastating blow to the figure skating world and to me, personally "
(Even though I know that this sport, as it's ruled now, doesn't deserve him)

I'm not OK.
There is a big hole in my stomach and it hurts so much.

I can't even watch the clips. I had a glimpse on some news and have seen the press conference, but I can't watch all those recaps of Dai's carrier, just can't No Neutral

btw here is the press conference:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRDXpZhikww
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4U5-64mQSlE
and here is a partial translation by the great rosewood from FSU

Notice like cameras go crazy every time he smiles. Everyone wants to have his smile. His precious smile...

Here is a clip with english translation
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x27wmy7_1014-9_sport

The most touching moment for me is when he passes a microphone to coach Nagamitsu - he looks up on her face with concern in his eyes... She was the one really moved there, always close to tears...

The most painful thing for me is that I'm not sure if he is OK with his decision too.
If he was sure, if he had a plan, if it was because of his injuries - I could take that. But he plays down the injuries and his explanations don't convince me.

From magical eggplant with wings:
he didn't think his retirement would be such a big deal
and now he's like '...oops now i have to stay retired'
WHAT DID YOU THINK NO ONE WAS GONNA NOTICE
THE ENTIRE WORLD IS HEARTBROKEN
YOU CAN'T ANNOUNCE YOUR RETIREMENT
JUST TO CONVINCE YOURSELF YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO RETIRE!!

http://magicaleggplant.tumblr.com/post/100158673198/selenadover-indaicisive-when-youre-sad-about

I know I will sound like one crazy fan (and I am), but I refuse to accept it's over.
It's the only way I can function.

I will wait for Dai's return till the end (- which probably is, I don't know - JN 2017? Wink )

Hugs to you ilica. Feel better.

When I first listened to the press confrence I was sort of expecting him to say that he accepted
a job and that was why he was retiring from competitive skating so that he can focus on that.

I am sure Dai has many offers on the table and he needs time to figure out what would be
best for him.

My opinion is that he is physically unable to compete anymore, look what happened to him leading up to Sochi he practically killed himself. Why would he want to go through that again (even though he denied injuries were a factor for his decision).

ilica, thank you so much for great amount of links and info. A big hug from me, too.

I understand your concern and doubts and sorrow, anyway we can only believe in what he said.
The way he acted is understandable to me: sometimes you have to take a hard decision, even if you don't have plans and you are confused, because only after leaving "the problem" behind, you start seeing what lies ahead more clearly. That's basically what he expressed and I trust him.

This understanding does not lessen the pain, I know. Crying or Very sad but our pain is nothing if compared with what Dai suffered in last two season, from the moment his knee started to hurt in Fall 2012... and the terrible injury of last November. He cannot compete physically with younger and injuryfree skaters. And YES this sport now cannot give him the place and scores he deserves.

Here some kind blogger posted translations of messages by Team Japan (with links to sources)

http://fstranslations.tumblr.com/post/100030462874/team-japans-messages-for-daisuke-after-his-retirement

Last line of Kenji's message is funny, but warm and nice at the same time.

BTW, ilica... great choice for your new avatar!

Tv news of event in Kurashiki, with many people here to cheer and love him. Dai is so cute and kind with the little kid  I love you

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNl51t8MfD0#t=131

Seems that Dai and his mum said something very funny... maybe some kind Japanese friend can translate?

Dai-chan, you have received  huge amount of messages of love and support from fans, fs lovers and other skaters from all over the world and they still keep coming. Are you starting to understand and believe you are really Legend of figure skating? Or are you surprised of all this fuss about you? Maybe the second one.. We'll never know  Smile

Thanks Shyla and Pattina!
Guess, I'm a big baby, thinking his knee will magically heal itself...

I know you're right.

Still
he is not some skater - no offense to other skaters, he is Daisuke Takahashi, like Plushenko - The Symbol, The Legend, and I can't believe he gives up.

I guess it's my crazy, out of fairy tales, world view or something.
But - at first he planed to retire before his public at Tokyo WC 2011, then at the last WC, both times he wasn't allowed to perform his Swan Song before his loving public - this had a meaning for me, like God refuses to accept his resignation.
I've convinced myself of this and went on, happily waiting for his return to competition - when he is ready to return. Yes, I knew, at the moment it's impossible for him to compete with those crazy youngsters and their three, or more, quads programs, but we still have to see if they can keep the crazy pace. Things might change.

That's why this was such blow to me. Lesson to learn - never trust your stupid intuition!

Oh Ilica. I’m sending you and everyone on this forum a big hug from Canada. You are not a big baby. I think we are all processing the disappointing news in different ways. I feel the same way. Even ‘though I’ve thought of a few things he can do with his life a small part of me still wants to hold onto the hope that he will come back. As the saying goes “never say never” and “it’s not over, ‘til it’s over”.

Shyla: I also wonder if he’s downplaying his injuries. I thought of this because didn’t he require massages backstage in the last ice show? It made me wonder about the toll, skating in each show, was taking on his body as I don’t think he’s really fully rested to let his body completely heal. If I’m not mistaken I think he only took one or two months off from training, after Sochi, before he began the ice shows.

Pattina: Thanks again for the latest comments from the Skating World. Please keep them coming because I enjoy reading them and it’s so touching how everyone holds him in such high regard. I hope if he’s reading them all he will finally see what the rest of the world has known all along.

The last line in the message that Ilica posted from Magical Eggplant brought a smile to my face. “Loving Dai is an emotional rollercoaster that never ends EVEN AFTER HE RETIRES”. Truer words have never been spoken! Hold onto your hats, everyone, because I don't think it's over yet. Whether it's a comeback or something completely different I am sure this will not be the end of following Dai on our rollercoaster ride. Kurt Browning retired 20 years ago (I think) and he's still around either skating in shows, commentating during competitions and/or hosting reality TV shows. So even if this feels like the end, it's not.

Don't feel ashamed ilica. Saying what is on your mind and venting is not shameful, as my mother used to say it cleanses the soul. Besides I think of us here at the forum as not only fans of Dai-chan but good cyber firends who care for each other and more importantly listen to each other. That is how I feel.

Dancergirl yes he did have massages after his perfromances in FOI. Shiz mentioned it. I don't remember the context but she wanted Dai to go with the group (maybe dinner) and he was busy having massage. Dai must miss his Physical therapist (can't remember his name right know) who was part of Dai's team when he was competiting.

Thank you Dancergirl and Shyla!

You are wonderful friends! I love you

Yes, Dai-chan had massages during the break at FOI. No wonder, he had such demanding programs plus crazy dancing in the opening and finale. I just watched the entire show last night to cheer myself up (it didn't work, I kept bursting into tears every time Dai has appeared)
I know it's a wrong thread, but if anyone needs something to cheer up, here is the whole FOI (and this poster has nice collection of other shows and latest news, so it's not that off topic)
